Few details of what was stolen were disclosed when the robbery was first reported. Mr. Rosen said the thieves took about 1.7 million flash-memory chips, which are widely used for storing data in smartphones, music players and digital cameras.

The Unigen theft was unusually bold and well-organized, Mr. Sterner said. Suspects entered the company's Fremont, Calif., headquarters wearing masks and gloves, and armed with rifles and handguns. They held up five Unigen employees at gunpoint, tied them up, and moved them into a back room. They then loaded the stolen chips into a large truck and drove off, leaving the victims bound.
