Go Cali!

California tied with Massachusetts and New Jersey last month for having the highest credit score in the nation, according to a report released today by CreditKarma, a San Francisco firm that monitors consumer credit.

The three states had an average credit score of 684, ahead of the national average of 666. San Diego County was near the top of the list for major metropolitan areas, with a score of 686, according to a separate study of metro areas released last month.

The worst scores were located in the South. Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee all had scores below 650. Arkansas was the worst, with an average score of 636.

Nationwide, most states have substantially improved their credit scores over the past year as consumers pay down debt - and as banks continue to be highly selective in making loans and issuing credit cards.

Really, CreditKarma ran credit reports on millions of consumers to obtain this data?

This article is unsubstantiated nonsense.

Well, that's the very lastest report I could find.

And I have no reason to doubt it so Congrats to Californians on a job well done. At least for last month anyway.

You ought to learn to be more inquisitive. Do you normally accept everything at face value on the internet?

Ugh at trying to shoot the messenger.

This ranking has been widely reported in a ton of newspapers and business publications so forgive me if I side with them as opposed to your preconceived notion that everything in CA sucks and we might as well die already.

And so if you have a grievance, I encourage you to contact creditkarma immediately and take them to task.

Its sad that 684 is above average. Doesn't anyone pay their bills on time?

This article states the average Californian has over $7,000 in credit card debt. Maybe the state legislature is learning.

Is not credit information private?

Well, if San Francisco and Los Angeles are indicative of the rest of the state as far as debt, then that's a good thing because both SF and LA are among the cities with the lowest consumer debt per capita.
