My best may not be your best.

Personally, I'd love to live in Edna Valley, right outside of San Luis Obispo....that would be my 'perfect' place.... maybe even a little ways down Old Creek Road in Cayucos.... just stunning, but waaaay out of my price range.

The answer is so dependent on one's personality, needs, and wants as to make the question pointless without more information.

Edna Valley would be very high on my list. Avila valley/See Canyon also.
Parts of San Diego county, Monterey county. I guess Im a beach person, I could easily do Marin county too...

Monterey along with Pacific Grove and Carmel with Big Sur in it's backyard, a marine life sanctuary, fun town with an international feel due to DoD presence with the Defense Language Institute, Naval Post Graduate School and the Monterey Presidio. It is just far enough from the Bay area to have wide open spaces and minimal traffic. Yet close enough to drive into San Jose or SF within 1-2 hours. Also lots of activities/events/festivals throughout the year.
