Newport and Santa Clara? For single people? I don't get it, Newport is mainly old people with no style at all and Santa Clara is a family suburb. Mountain View is #8?...I am sorry but I think this list is crap, I understand it is all about finding a "sugar daddy" but who wants to be single in #5 Irvine?1!?

I love California but this is a horrible list.
Yeah, as much as I like some of these towns I have to say the list is a bit odd to say the least. Growing up in the South Bay (Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo, Torrance), Redondo never stood out as 'The Place' to be, especially for singles. Although I really do like South Redondo better for families now. But there are many more single people in the Hermosa, Manhattan area. And Newport Beach is a real joke too. Then Irvine, Sunnyvalle and Mountain View? Many of those Silicon Valley singles are married to their jobs working 50-60+ hours a week. It doesn't make for the best social life.

But Santa Cruz is great just by nature of its proximity to so much natural beauty. Between the Mtns and the coast it's a great place, especially if one likes surfing.

I have to admit, I was surprised Santa Cruz wasn't higher on the list because there ARE a lot of singles, and quite a variety of singles. It's not a high-tech town, per se, but there are high tech people who own computer companies here, or work over-the-hill in San Jose.

And the university is here, plus, I know there are trust fund babies, and very wealthy people here. We even have our share of famous folk.

Of course, there are the regular folks....like me who don't fit the "wealthy" category, but I agree that Santa Cruz is more of a fun, vibrant place for young people looking for someone.

It's just fun to see what towns they chose. Interestingly, it's mostly California towns on that list!

Yeah, I think they basically looked at two parameters:

1) Average income
2) % single

They then deduced that the town with the highest combination of both gives you the best chance of landing a wealthy partner. They may have oversimplified a bit.

I hate to say it in a way for those who really like the publication, but you have to consider the source. IMO it a completely subjective, non-scientific approach just in looking at the list as well as the order. It was probably a poorly constructed poll of some kind asking their subscriber base. I doubt they use any simple formula like the one you mention above. Because I know Manhattan and Hermosa would be higher in both categories for example. I think you have to take articles like this with a big grain of salt and a laugh.

Edit: I did notice they mention these two parameters in the article. But these still are not a very good basis for the article's conclusion - Best places for rich and single. You can take a place with a lot of elderly wealthy people like Newport and some starving students who live their for the beach life crammed into apartments or a small beach house. Even Santa Cruz has this class structure. You have a lot of students from all over who attend the University and a large group of roving surfers who live on a shoestring budget. Then you have a gentrified area and homes which are owned by wealthy retired folks, some of whom keep their homes only as a vaction residence. So those two simple numbers actually mean very little, even for a gold digger.

I'm not one of the "rich," but I still live here! If I can do it, anyone can!!

I like your post Wisteria... What do you do for a living? I ask because I have been trying to work and live in Santa Cruz for awhile now.

I have heard so many good things about Santa Cruz. I'm not from CA but would like to relocate there. I'm looking for a special someone, male. I'm a great looking and lively mature lady who loves the sun, water etc. If you're out there I'm out here

Since the fact that I am neither rich or single then I can safely say that Oxnard does it for me. When I become rich, and I plan on doing just that, and If I ever become single I will consider checking it out. I do like the Santa Monica area though. Lots of fun.

I don't think this is the appropriate place to say what I do, however, I will add that many people do live in Santa Cruz and work in San Jose -- that is very common. Perhaps you might want to extend your search to jobs in San Jose, and then live in Santa Cruz?? You would have plenty of company. It's about where do you want to live, and where do you want to spend your time outside of work? Once you're at a job, it's no different than anyplace else (except here we see people carrying their surfboards on their trucks/cars driving to work!).

There are plenty of companies in San Jose that hire, and there are plenty of rentals/homes in Santa Cruz. You get your foot in the door and go from there. Sometimes compromise is necessary, especially in the beginning. Good luck!

There ARE a few apartments to rent in Santa Cruz, it's just that they're so outrageously expensive and require first, last, security, and cleaning deposits fully up front (because there are so many university students who trash their places).

I don't see why it's that surprising. California is great if you're rich. Since most people aren't rich/high income, then it's not so great for the majority of people. Hence, the California bashing. It's frustrating to a lot of people who live in a place where they feel like they're just scraping by while earning the area's median income.
