You don't need an EIN if you are a sole proprietorship unless you have employees, the id of your business is your SSN.
By the way, this isn't very good advice. If you are doing any kind of business that makes any kind of substantial income, then you want to be at least an LLC. I know that there are people who have functioned for years as a sole proprietor. But the tax advantages are numerous and the filings simply aren't onerous.

Umm...did you actually read what I stated? My comment had nothing to do with being a sole prop vs a LLC. Rather, it was regarding whether one should use an EIN instead of your SSN if you are a sole prop. The same issue would apply if you were a single person LLC.
In terms of an LLC being preferable to a sole prop, I stated just that in this thread:

I used to have a snack food route and I used to see a fellow bring in a small box of knives every so often to the delis and small food stored I serviced. He would also leave with another box the same size. What he was doing was picking up and delivering Knives to be sharpened for food preparation in the stores.Learn how to sharpen and recondition cutlery and you could do this at home with a small investment In equipment.Another guy rides around in a small step van and sharpen knives, scissors, pinking shears.hedge clippers etc. right on the van,he rings a bell when he comes down the street and comes back a couple times a year.It had a generator that would run the various grinders and sharpening stones. He has been around for years its a family business.
