I lived in Burlington back in the late '90s, when I was in my 20s (after college). I moved there without a job and ended up working a few different ones (some overlapping) to make ends meet, which actually wasn't hard at all. I even substitute taught at several of the schools there--Edmunds Middle, among others.

It was a fun town--and beautiful. I loved seeing the lake behind the town as I'd come in on Main Street. But it was hard to find a real career job there.

From my observation, people in their working years, if they move, generally move to follow a job. Or they move because where they came from just isn't that nice, or they're tired of it, or some different city has lots of jobs. I moved to the DC area in the early 2000s, found employment (and a career) soon after, and have been here in Arlington ever since.

I visited Montpelier a couple of times. I love that it doesn't have a McDonald's--that's so defiantly Vermont. (Plus their food is crap!)

Here's a good story for you: One of the first times I visited Montpelier, I walked into the Capitol building. The front door was left standing open, and there was a sign saying "No tours today, but feel free to walk around." So I did. I ended up going up a staircase into the dome. There was a little trapdoor at the top. It was open! I ended up standing outside the dome, behind the old decorative railing. So cool. I doubt one could do that anymore.

By the way, the wife and I are thinking about moving to the Northwest (probably near Seattle) when we retire. She's tired of cold winters, and I'm tired of hot summers and allergies. We're both tired of the traffic. We like Bainbridge Island, Bellingham, and the Olympic Peninsula.
