In my opinion, Idylwood's pretty nice. I live about a mile away, so I'm familiar. I had friends who lived there 10 years ago who paid $600/month in rent then; not sure what the going rate is now. Idylwood is in the southernmost part of Cheektowaga, so you'd probably be about a 15-minute drive from your workplace, assuming normal enough weather. There appear to be a decent number of Indian-Americans living there, judging by pedestrians I often see near the complex...back in 2006 or so when I was there quite a bit, you'd often see people playing cricket on nice summer days, which is not the most common sight in Western New York (although I did see that the area's first cricket field was just created in I believe Ellicott Creek Park within the past few weeks).
I'm pretty sure you're right that there's a Slate Creek near the Galleria, but Idylwood's Slate Creek is in the location I was describing off of French Road:
...the street I was thinking of off of Union near the Galleria is apparently South Creek...I thought there was a Slate Creek over there myself...so much for my command of the Erie County streetscape
