Just read in Florida Today online that Brevard will be banning panhandling. Good move!!! But jailing and fining panhandlers? Hmmm, where are they suppose to get the fine money from? Jailing, well I guess it is "free" room and board. How about being PROACTIVE with this. Jobs are out there. How about making it a REQUIREMENT for the offenders to get and keep a job.

This problem is only going to get worst IF we do not PREVENT homelessness BEFORE it happens!

So many babies and kids out there, brings tears to my eyes. Poor babies

I wish all cities would ban panhandling. Miami has panhandlers at every major intersection.

ps. it's internet/forum etiquette to include the link that you are referring to.

I don't for a second believe most of these panhandlers are destitute. It has become more of a scam. There are jobs everywhere now. Will work for food? Get a job in a restaurant. Win, win.

The Panhandlers feel they ARE working full-time dancing, attracting, and gaining the attention of their fellow neighbors on Main Street. Sometimes a panhandler will bring children or a dog along on the job for those extra dollars.

This is what we have created in America and now we don't like it anymore. We enabled them and now we want the law to fix it. Right?

Yes, sad that some of them bring dogs and children. Usually the dog and child never get the benefits of cash given. Sad!

As a Christian I know that if Jesus were to pay us a visit He wouldn't be sitting in the Oval office but most likely dressed in rags and begging on some street corner.

Arresting and jailing actually costs tax payers so it's not a well thought out plan nor one that embraces cost savings.

A good plan that actually works is housing - and this takes many forms from affordable housing, rent subsidies, and apartment buildings that are devoted to getting people off the streets, then assisting with drug/alcohol rehab., and vocational rehab. This is actually the most cost effective/cost avoidance plan. Even more cost effective than keeping people on the streets.

My 2 cents: take what you and leave the rest.

Excellent input!!! The sad part of all of this is FUNDING. A lot of programs "designed" to PREVENT homelessness are either out of funds or went out of business. Here in Cave Springs, Virginia a lot of churches TRY to help. But with so many folks LOSING their income sources and rent INCREASING, less folks are able to DONATE. I am in the County. In Roanoke, Virginia (city) they have a wonderful place called the RESCUE MISSION. A great concept as Roanoke started FINING/JAILING January 2022 for sleeping on their sidewalks and panhandling. But sone homeless REFUSE to stay in the Rescue Mission = not wanting to follow their RULES. And the Waiting Lists for example seniors like myself are awful. So there are a lot of elderly DYING on the streets. So sad.
