I'm looking for opinions based on experience from people with a salary near $60K. I would like to be able to live comfortably (for me that does not take much) and not paycheck to paycheck. I am still trying to work out how much I will have for rent after other expenses (right now it looks like about $1200), but I don't really want to pay everything that's left over on rent. I'd like to be able to save some. I'm single, no debt, and am not a big spender. I don't want a roommate (I'm too old for that), and I'd like to live in a nice area. I have seen apartments that are in that price range, but since I haven't visited yet, I don't have an idea about whether these are nice places, and by the time I factor in pet rent, utilities, etc., I don't really have a realistic idea of what it would actually cost to live there.

I also have been looking in the same area , I have been looking at Longmont , Lafayette , Erie , Louisville ,Niwot which are a reasonable commute time away and I have found that 1200 a month is average for a really nice one bedroom apt or a two bedroom older apt .

That is going to be tough if you do not want a roommate. If you have 1200 left for rent AND savings, you may not be able to swing it. If you have 1200 just for rent, and are still saving some, then that is doable.

Just by doing a quick apartment search, only 2 apartments come up listed under 900, and they are only rooms in houses.

Thanks for the replies so far! I worked on my budget a little more, and I think I can safely estimate 1200 just for rent. I've budgeted some into "other expenses" for savings. There are still some unknowns, like, if I don't live right in Boulder maybe I can take the bus, decreasing my budget for car expenses. On the other hand, if I live in Boulder, maybe I could go home and walk my dog at lunch, and cut dog-walker expenses .

All the places I have looked at require that my rent be no more than between 2.5 two one third of my salary before taxes a month ...
