How is the violent crime situation in Boston suburbs vs NYC suburbs? Doesn't NYC have some dreadful town just outside the city limits?
Town or state?

Objectively and especially anecdotally... violence is more endemic amongst Blak/Latinos Bostonians than New Yorkers in my experience. Just is.

New York has much livelier and safer streets at night and more positive diversions for at-risk youth than Boston. Both cities do pretty well, though. But there are many more " scenes" for young black/Latino people in NYC than in Boston, ranging from arts, entertainment, nightlife, internships, etc.

There also is just a deeper, more pervasive gang culture and general familiarity in inner-city Boston. In NYC, they don't really do gangs and certainly don't maintain them as we do in Boston.

Crime has to happen somewhere, and its brunt is dumped on the DRM in Boston. In the NYC metro, it's more spread out. And the policing is (was?) a lot more pervasive and harsh.

To people outside of my demographic (young black inner-city male), NYC and Boston feel closer in terms of danger, if not more dangerous in NYC. This year is an anomaly, and I'm sure trends will be back where they were within 2 years.

I was thinking it's the opposite. Boston in 680k in a metro of 4.9m, about 13%. NYC is 8.4m in a metro of 20.3m, about 40%. I'd have to imagine if Boston were everything inside of 128 the crime rate would be lower and if you included everything inside of 495 it would be lower still.

Bostons high crime areas are much higher level crime than even Brownsville. If you scale them relative to the population of the city that still holds true. there's a much higher level of complacency in Boston due to the lower levels of crime in the metro. Its just not a big concern except to a few. Crime is more evenly distributed in NYC and its metro.

I think in Boston criminals tend to be attracted to the city. Most of the neighboring cities are safer, no?
Is there a city inside of 95 with violent crime rate worst than Boston?
I am pretty sure there are multiple towns and cities in the inner metro of NY with a higher violent crime rate than NYC itself.

Just outside the limits of NYC aren't there some pretty bad cities? Like many of the NJ cities or Mt. Vernon?

I think it's the reverse. The Projects breed criminals.

Lynn has actually a lower level but they are all 3 very close so yeah, pretty much the same.

I should have said criminal activity rather than criminals.
