Looking for suggestions on cool, laid back, fun bars/restaurants to work at. Moving to the area June 1st. I have 9 years experience - mostly in sports bars, irish pubs. Favorite job I've held was at a family-owned Irish pub. I like to be really busy. I prefer not to work in a place where there will be tons of fake IDs floating around. No dance clubs! Any suggestions? What are some cool places? Areas we are looking to live include Allston, Brighton, Brookline, Dedham, Needham... so probably nothing too far from any of those towns.

There are TONS of irish pubs and VERY high volume bars in all of Boston. problem is, most people who work in them have been there for YEARS. I have been a bartender and a waitress for 10 years and I tried applying to several locations last year in the Fenway park area and they would only hire me as a hostess to start! What I'm getting at is that it will be very difficult to find something right in town unless you know someone. I would look in the Quincy area...there are some pretty big bars down that way that will hire "outsiders" but no such luck in fanueil hall/fenway/etc!

Hmm - I figured as much. I hope I can find something OK. The hardest part about moving for me is leaving my current job - its the kind of bartending job that you'd hold onto for years.

Yeah I feel bad breaking that news to you, but it is the truth. Boston doesn't have a very "friendlY" vibe towards people from out of the area. That is why I am getting out. It is a city where if you are not a local, people are not going to be welcoming towards you.

where are you getting this from??? the city welcomes thousands of new students each year, and many other besides students. most of the people I knew were not born and raised in Boston. there's this misunderstanding that all Bostonians are cold hearted and mean. people aren't going to line up and give you hugs and handshakes as you enter the city, but they aren't going to turn the cold shoulder either. people are nice here, but in a different way that Midwesterners and Southerners are seen as nice. basically, come into the city w/ a positive attitude, you'll get the same; come here w/ a negative one and assume everyone you meet is unfriendly, and it becomes a self fulling prophecy

my biggest concerns for the OP is getting a job at a pub. some of these may hire w/in the family or a circle of friends, the the ones in the college areas may be more open to out of towners (as opposed to the ones in neighborhoods w/ strong roots)
