Must you use every remotely positive post about any place outside the city as an excuse to express your disdain for us "banal" suburbanites.

Eh, I live in the suburbs, too. I still wouldn't want to be young and single and live in Billerica.

Agree on the bold. Wouldn't Lowell offer some degree of social life with the U-Mass Lowell scene? Obviously it is not as extensive as Boston but if the OP is willing to make some compromises...

It's not disdain. I grew up in the suburbs. They have their purpose. They just don't work well for young, single, social people.

You don't seem to mind the "disdain" expressed for the commute, which loads of people gladly do to have a higher quality of life in their free time (despite it being reduced), and a trade off the OP clearly stated they wish to make.

maybe not Billerica, but there are some alternatives.

Plus if you really think about it. On a Sat night, you are maybe 30-45 mins from Boston. I'd rather do that drive, than sit in 1hr+ of traffic every day to get to Billerica. As a young, single professional, I had different interests I guess. I was never one for bars...and was more into outdoor activities and hanging at a friend's house around a firepit. I had my fill of the bar scene in college.

But, the Op has hinted they would rather live near the city, so in that case I think Somerville is the best spot for you, although get ready for a pretty variable commute depending on the time of year and time you leave the house. But like I said before. I did that for nearly 7 years...you'll survive.

I'd probably look to Lowell, then Malden, then decide on Somerville.

But while yeah, people say do the drive in the city, it really depends on your lifestyle. If he's like a large portion of the young single people around, lots of socializing involves bars and clubs, and seeing bands, which invariably has drinking involved. So trying to find a place where a person doesn't need to drive is pretty critical.

I concur with the consensus ... an area like Davis Square has the urban vibe, with bars, restaurants and ready subway access to the rest of the city. The commute isn't trivial but it wouldn't be horrendous, and you can vary the route a fair bit.
