Hi all; I've always enjoyed perusing this site for fun in my free time, but now I actually need some advice!

I am getting married in a few months and will be joining my fiance in Boston, and we're looking for the right neighborhood for us. I'll be moving from Pittsburgh, which has a ridiculously low cost of living compared to Boston, and he is currently living in a TINY 500 sq ft. 2 bedroom near Northeastern with one roommate for $2000/month ($1000pp). In Boston, we'll be making between $130k-$140k combined, and we both have decent savings. I'm leaning towards wanting to buy something, as I feel like we could be putting that $2000/month rent to better use, but I'm also open to better rental options.

We'll both be working within a 5 minute walk of South Station so an easy commute there would be great. We'll have one car, but would prefer public transportation to get to work (bus or rail).

Neither of us are big partiers or anything, but we enjoy the occasional night out and do enjoy going out to eat, so those kind of options in walking distance would be fantastic. We also don't really have any problems with city living, as we've both done it in the past, but I would prefer a somewhat safer area (though obviously, I realize bad things can happen in "good" areas too).

Thanks so much in advance for your advice! Let me know if there's anything else I can clarify.

Buy in Quincy or go to Hingham if you prefer to set up for a long haul, and have better schools.

Kingeorge mentioned Hingham. The new condos near the commuter boat are nice and new, with shops and restaurant there. Even Wahlburger's fancy burger bar there opened by Mark's brother. Nice setting.

Not sure if it would exceed your income limit, though.

The commuter boat would get you within a ten-minute walk or less to South Station.

If there is a way to visit the area and tool around talking to people as well as the local Police to ask about the safety of an area, that is a helpful thing. This gives a better feel for an area as well as the advice.
