I've seen such great advice on commutes, etc. that I wanted to get your advice on a potential reverse commute. I've been looking to move to the Brighton/Allston area and am interviewing for a job in Norton (8:30am-4:30pm). I'm familiar with the area and realize this is quite a hike. HopStop is telling me that public transportation (bus and commuter rail) would take me almost 2 hours to get to work. Google Maps is telling me that it would take about 50 minutes to drive.
While a longer drive doesn't bother me, I'm concerned that with traffic on 128, it'll take me over an hour. The last time I drove on 128 was at peak rush hour coming out of the city and I sat in a lot of traffic to get to the North Shore.
Does anyone have any experience/insight into this commute? Nothing is set in stone, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to check things out.
I can't comment on a specific Brighton/Allston-Norton commute but in terms of Brighton going South on 95, 50 minutes is overly optimistic in my opinion. Depending on where you live in Allston/Brighton getting to 128 can be difficult. You either have to get on the Pike (and add a toll to your commute), get on rt. 9 or take back roads. Route 9 and the back roads both are slow. From where I lived in Brighton getting to 128 was could be 30 minutes all on it's own. The section of 128 you'll be on ranges from okay to crappy but you should be fine once you get to 95S after 93 splits off unless there is an accident.
I am in agreement with Beth98 as that 128/95 section can really get jammed up and the adjacent roads are as well. That is one tough ride from Norton to Brighton. The Norton part is pretty smooth but the rest is not. Not a comute that I would want in front of me. 1:30 may be the Norm
My thoughts are to live near Norton, or in Norton. Good luck friend
