Planning a visit to Boston (know little about the city) and likely will be staying in Medford. How easy is it to use public transportation to get downtown? If I read the T maps correctly, I will be about a mile west of the Orange line (Wellington Station). Is the Orange line my best option? Is it safe to walk there?

Sure Medford is safe and so is the Orange Line.

Crime wise it's safe, but it's not exactly pedestrian safe. You'll have to dodge heavy traffic on either rt 16 or the Fellsway.

Yeah, I have to agree w CC now that he mentions that. Being a downtown Bostonian I've only been to the Wellington station a few times but now that he mentions it I do seem to recall a rather narrow treacherous crumbling sidewalk along a busy highway. Is there decent cab services there CC? OP, I suspect there may be a shuttle from the hotel.
