Any favorite Christmas, or holiday, books -- adult or juvenile fiction? One of my favorites is the Christmas version of The Jolly Postman, which is a lot of fun, in and of itself -- the Jolly Postman delivers letters and cards and brochures and fliers to all sorts of fairy tale characters. I used to have my HS SRs read Dickens's A Christmas Carol (SR English in NC schools is typically Brit Lit), and other great titles include Madeleine L' Engle's The Glorious Impossible, and Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory (made into a beautiful film years ago). The author of the Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum also wrote a great one -- The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.

I don't have anything to add, but your list is so fresh. I just added that Jolly Postman to my wish-list and will order it this week for my grand-daughter, a very avid 3-year old reader.

Generally, at holiday time I look for either non-fiction or art books for friends, and myself. I also get subscriptions to great magazines this time of year that I might otherwise not order (the Nation, the Economist, Aperture, etc.)

I love Glen Beck's The Christmas Sweater for adult reading. Ted Dekker's The Drummer Boy, Carol Heyer's The First Christmas, and Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol for the kiddos.

Anything by Nathaniel Hawthorne for Halloween, although I prefer, "Ichabod Crane and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Young Goodman Brown." Anything by Poe is also great for Halloween. I especially love, "The Tell-Tale Heart." Then there's "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In Spanish, there's "Aura" by Carols Fuentes--truly creepy.
At Christmas, I always like to read, "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by C. Clement Moore. I read it as a child and always loved reading the actual story rather than a children's book version.

That is a a short story but it is an excellent holiday story.

Other great holiday reads include Santa and Pete *(Christopher Moore and Pamela Johnson; also a Hallmark special available on DVD), This Year It Will Be Different, (Maeve Binchy), A Child's Christmas In Wales, (Dylan Thomas), A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens; many movies), The Homecoming, (Earl Hamner, Jr.), The Christmas Box, (Richard Paul Evans), and A Redbird Christmas, Fannie Flagg.
