We are researching the possibility of moving to Birmingham and as with many people, the schools are one of our areas of investigation. We like to live in the country (currently on 5 AC) so we were wondering if there are any decent school districts outside of Birmingham but within commute distance (45 min). We don't need top of the line schools (if they are not available) just ones that in the 70% (and above) range, meaning sites like GreatSchools would rate the High School at a 7 or above.

Anyone have any ideas? If you do, I would also love to know about property costs for a modest home (1800 - 2200 sq ft) on 1 or more acres.

Thanks!

For Schools, try ALSDE - Education Directory/Reports (http://www.alsde.edu/html/reports_menu.asp - broken link)

As far has home values, we would have to know more of where, as the values will greatly depend on area.

Sorry, should have been more specific. We need to be on the south side of the metro area. We have food allergies and other issues that force us to eat pesticide free food. In searching on the web, it appears that all the organic stores (Whole Foods, Natural Foods, etc) are South. We don't want to live North and then have to drive through town to get to the stores.

Price range would be in the mid $200s max.
