It's just the demographics.
I agree, Mobile and Baldwin Counties aren't big enough to support a major team by themselves. Hypothetically though, I think a team could be very successful if they advertised themselves as the team of the Gulf Coast, instead of just Mobile. If they can make themselves appealing to both Biloxi/Gulfport and Pensacola then they likely have a big enough population to support themselves. If they can appeal themselves to Pensacola and Biloxi, this hypothetical team would now have an influence of 1.5+ mil people (the majority of both Pensacola and Biloxi's metro population lives within an hour of Mobile).

Most of this stuff is based on media markets, which is basically what you are describing with the hour drive radius, but more specifically the designated market area.

Birmingham's market ranks 45th. Mobile's is 57th. After that, you start getting into facilities, disposable income, the area's appetite for sporting events, etc. Birmingham regularly shows up near or at the top for percentage of viewers of college football.

That's a cool resource, thanks for sharing, always wondered how large the media market was for Mobile cause I knew it was shared with Pensacola

Not sure if this qualifies as "Cool News", but I flew out of BHM today (probably my 5th time this year) and I have never in my life seen it so busy. The security checkpoint line stretched past the Southwest ticket counter. I have TSA Precheck, and even it took 10-15 minutes (usually 2-3). I'm guessing the normal line took 30-40 minutes.

Is today some travel holiday I'm unaware of? This was about 6:00 am on a Tuesday.

It’s been like that for a few months. I think TSA is very short staffed right now. I flew out last month and it was just as long as you stated. I’ve never seen the line so long.

Yeah I had a similar experience in late October. Not sure if it's busier than usual or if TSA is just understaffed.

The airport has had two hiring events within the past 3-4 months and TSA jobs was amongst some of the positions they was hiring for.
