If any of you are readers, I strongly recommend this book. Written by a local, and it takes place right here in Alabama.

Plus, it is city-data topical. It is page turner fiction about the dog eat dog world of cities and states spending big money to recruit companies.
Thanks for sharing. Adding this to the list of local reads!

And another one relocating to Birmingham

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh...h-company.html

The HealNow investment is the ninth investment by AFF (Alabama Future Fund) since the fund was launched in Q4 of 2018. Like previous investments made by AFF in companies located outside the State of Alabama, HealNow will move its headquarters to Birmingham and Founder/CEO Halston Prox will relocate from New York City to Birmingham in Q1 2021. AFF served as the lead investor on the round with participation from the recently launched SoftBank Opportunity Fund. The SoftBank Opportunity Fund is a $100 million venture fund dedicated to supporting and building a community of outstanding Black, Latinx, and Native American founders.

HealNow was started by two dynamic founders, Halston Prox and Joshua Smith (Co-founder/CTO). Halston and Joshua met as undergrads at the University of Texas. Halston brings over 8 years of experience in the healthcare industry managing implementation for electronic medical records software for large health systems like Mount Sinai and Baylor, Scott and White. Joshua has been a web and mobile app developer for the last five years with extensive experience working with both large enterprise clients as well as helping startups build early versions of their product.

According to Mr. Prox, HealNow is looking forward to the move to Birmingham and understands the value of relocating to a city with a deep healthcare focus. “We are very excited to announce the move of our headquarters to Birmingham and are thrilled to have funding partners like AFF and SoftBank to help us build an incredible company. Together, we will be able to expand our footprint throughout the east coast, southern states, and thriving communities such as Birmingham. This partnership moves us closer to achieving our goal of bringing the entire pharmacy industry online.”

Mickey Millsap, Partner at Redhawk Advisory, LLC (“Redhawk”) serving as the investment manager to AFF said, “We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with Halston and Joshua on this journey. Not only is this team building a great company that is solving a large and demonstrable problem, but Halston and Joshua are the type of leaders that we want to bring to the Birmingham startup ecosystem.”

ICYMI...amongst the news

https://bhamnow.com/2020/12/09/cook-...other-openings

Cookout is indeed coming to downtown across from Luxe Ultra Lounge on 24th St.

First QuikTrip gas station in the metro coming to Calera. One was proposed for Fultondale, but I think the citizens voted it down. Maybe something changed since then.

Alabama minor league teams spared as Major League Baseball cuts 3 dozen other affiliates

Interesting... Southern League cut from 10 to 8 teams.

Jackson (TN) did not receive an invitation (didn't realize that's how that worked) from its affliate. Sadly, there were about 40 total affiliates cut.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville (FL) steps up to AAA... man, I wish the Barons could've done that.

Out of curiosity, is there any real difference between AA and AAA. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine the games being more interesting or there being additional fan interest by moving up a tier. Maybe top prospects spend a little more time at the AAA level than AA? Or maybe MLB pitchers returning from injury are more likely to get a AAA start than AA start? But I don't even know if that's really true. Seems like the only difference (if you aren't a player in the farm system trying to make it big), really, is the size of the market of the teams they face.

no, i agree with you... in general, i don't think there's any noticeable difference from either a fan or player experience. i think it's more a status thing in my mind. we'd be in a group of larger cities/peers.

Johnson: Global Forum is back with $2.9 million federal grant to find a home in Birmingham, maybe

i had wondered what the status of this thing was. i'm not sure i understand the objection to this from the 16th street board. the civil rights district seems EXACTLY the place for this.
