Major project eyes Birmingham – and signs point to another Amazon facility:

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh..._news_headline

"The project is a 96,770-square-foot office/warehouse and delivery center building that is planned for a 30-acre site 225 Daniel Payne Drive in the Hooper City Neighborhood. The facility is expected to create at least 100 jobs – although exact details about headcount and the total capital investment haven't been disclosed.

Last year, Amazon Logistics opened up a facility in north Birmingham at 2601 27th St. N. The Amazon Logistics facility includes the company's last-mile delivery services and introduced Amazon's Delivery Service Partner and Flex programs to the Birmingham area. The company has already said it planned to expand that facility within the next two years."

Can't wait to find out exactly what this "Major project" is!

I did lol at this part:

“This is by no means settled,” Carpenter said. “We’re still not sure what’s going to happen in this location. An amphitheater was one of several options that when we met with the community was favorably received in addition to a bowling alley, movie theater, aquarium. So, there are some other things that we’re continuing to look at for this site.”
I'm so over Valerie Abbott Moderator cut: offensive pejorative deleted. She was one of the main council members who blocked the MLB Youth Academy at George Ward Park Moderator cut: racist speculation deleted. It would have been a great thing for a 20-acres part of 105+/- acre underutilized portion of that park. If all of the neighborhood associations were ok and advocated for amphitheater, which Birmingham is truly lacking is an outdoor event amphitheater as Tuscaloosa has one on the Black Warrior River and there are several available in comparable sized Southern major cities, then so be it. She is setting herself up to be voted out of office come 2021 as she is more of an impediment than asset at this point.

While Birmingham may not have a true amphitheater I don't know that it necessarily needs one. When Protective Stadium is complete I think you'll see it used a decent bit as an outdoor concert venue.

She isn't council president no more. So that's start. But the communities in her district, she is safe unless she decides to retire or something. They voted parker the new president earlier this week

A decade ago Abbott was one of the only rational people on the City Council and seemed to be pushing us forward in a good way. Now she just seems like the old person trying to prevent anything from happening (NIMBY).

Update related to the Redmont boutique hotel:

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh..._news_headline

"Earlier this month, the city of Birmingham’s zoning advisory committee did not recommend approval of the rezoning of the Sycamore apartments area but recommended approval for the Bayer Properties building with certain conditions, including an 80-foot height restriction."

This seems disappointing, not only part of it not being approved, but also the other part having an 80-foot height restriction. They wanted to do 10-stories. Zoning issues suck sometimes.

Carvana eyes major project in Bessemer

"Carvana (NYSE: CVNA), a rapidly expanding online car dealer, is planning a automobile inspection and reconditioning center facility in Jefferson County that could create up to 400 jobs and represent a potential investment of more than $40 million.

The Birmingham Business Journal has learned the company is considering a large site across from Milo’s manufacturing operations on Morgan Road for the project."
