My husband is being transferred to Birmingham for work. We would like to rent a pet friendly home that is near playgrounds/parks for my 3 year old. Prefer if rent is $1500 or less a month and excepts two large friendly dogs. My husband will be using the airport for work travel frequently so being within a 40 minute drive to the airport would be ideal. Being close to the grocery store is ideal and near a Chick Fil A would be a nice bonus.
We are moving from the suburbs of Houston TX.

Any advice on where to begin looking and a real estate website for the area would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Try Moody or Leeds, they should both be reasonable and meet your listed criteria.

...Or Trussville, Fultondale, Gardendale, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Hoover.

Some of those are a little further from the airport than the suburbs on the north/east side of town, but all are safely within 40 minutes of the airport.

At the $1500 price point, you are going to be able to rent a nice 3 bedroom pretty much anywhere you want in the metro area.

As stated the price point given will give you a multitude of choices. The areas immediately around the airport range from not so desireable to avoid altogether. There are refurbished craftsmen homes in Avondale and Norwood that i would look into as they would give you easy access to the airport, downtown and everywhere else.

how important are schools at this point? if a low priority, I'd consider Crestwood or Avondale. very convenient to the airport and several nearby grocery stores. there's a chick-fil-a within 5-8 minutes of crestwood.

I am not sure how important schools are. We will rent for a year then hopefully find a home to buy. Then schools will be very important. I guess I depends on the school district rules for how long you need to live in the school district before you can attend their schools.
Being near a good pre-school is important while we rent.

I have read some of the other threads about the black on black crime, gangs, muggings, etc. We like to go to museums, the zoo, festivals, etc. should I be concerned about crime when out and about with my 3 year old?

No. Unless you plan on joining a gang, dealing drugs and seeking out those who particpiate in those activities, your chances of running into that crowd going to the zoo, McWane or outdoor festivals is virtually nil.

Yeah, I think people tend to be overly concerned by crime statistics. Yes, there are certain areas that seem to have a higher concentration of crime. Just be aware of your surroundings and try not to put yourself in a compromising situation. The activities you described don't seem very conducive for becoming a victim of a crime.

Things like carjackings, muggings, robberies, etc can and have happened all across the metro area.

Murders, on the other hand, are almost ALWAYS between 2 people who know each other and are rarely random.
