Mentioned in another thread, "UPDATED: New and Upcoming Projects," Publix Super Markets is planning to locate and open a distribution center on 153 acres in Jefferson Metropolitan Park in McCalla. A $34 million investment could create 200 jobs.

Sites in Alabama and Tennessee have been under consideration for a new distribution center.

Jefferson County Commission approved an incentives package for the distribution center on Thursday, 10 September 2015.

Publix purchased property in Jefferson Metropolitan Park Tuesday. The 625,000 square feet distribution center will distribute non-perishable items to Publix stores in Alabama, Tennessee, the Florida panhandle, and western Georgia. It should be operational by 2017.

Default Publix Distribution, Jefferson Metropolitan Park, 7200 Jefferson Metropolitan Parkway, McCalla, Alabama 35111-3925

Publix opens its McCalla, Alabama, distribution center on Wednesday, 22 February 2017. The distribution center will serve initially over 80 stores in Alabama and Tennessee and approximately 60 additional stores in Georgia and western Florida by the end of the year.

I do not know which warehouses will be at Publix's McCalla distribution center. Its high velocity warehouses are the most common followed by dairy/boxed meat, produce, and frozen food warehouses.

Publix is the type of company that the U.S. needs to survive. Because of employee ownership, it is immune to much of the "get the money and strip it" predation that dooms other businesses. Because of employee ownership, labor and management tend to be on the same page rather than fighting.

Publix operates itself well, which allows for continued expansion through additional stores and additional opportunities in its support areas.

With a new distribution center and Interstate 22 and Interstate 269 complete by 2018, is Publix in position to enter Mississippi and Kentucky and further expand in Tennessee into Memphis?
