Aloha Everyone!

I was just curious. I heard that the locals in Kona, on The Big Island don't care too much for visitors. From what I've heard they don't mind if you hang out near and around the tourist areas, but you go beyond that and it's a no no. Is there much truth to this? or is this just someone visiting that has no Aloha themselves?

Mahalo,
Kelly4Sun

On the Big Island they arrest Census workers. What does that tell you?

I've never found that to be true.

But on the other hand I wouldn't hang out at any of the super local beach park areas at night when they've got their beer on.

Same common sense you would use anywhere.

Aloha Balad1,

I wouldn't want to hang out on any southern California beach when the locals got their beer on either Ha! I think it all boils down to the amount of Aloha you give out, is what you get back. Give respect, get respect in return . We've never had any problems with the locals in Maui and not even in Molokai. They are some of nicest people we've ever met.

I also never saw that, especially since the majority of people in that area are mainland transplants or tourist. It may be that because there are so many tourist, visitors and new commers, there may be more people who mistake dissaproval as hatred. If you talk to transplanted mainlander residents of that area, they tell you they see things a lot different than when they were new to the area. Heck, i've heard them cursing out the tourist just as much.

I am new to the Hilo side from mainland and it is a shame that mainlanders or anybody finds the need to curse out tourists. To say the least they bring revenue and guess what we are all humans..............

We have always thought that there was more acceptance of tourists and mainland transplants in the Kona area than anywhere else on the Big Island. Maybe because there are so many of them there?

We just got back from Kona moments ago. Some mainland friends are staying at the Marriot so we went over to visit. There weren't that many folks wandering around at all. The restaurant (Roy's) was about half full, the parking lot was about one third full, the hotel just had a few folks wandering through it and the shops were about the same. I'd guess they were at less than a 50% level from "normal" although I don't get over there enough to really feel what "normal" is.

There was a big city feel to the place, sort of they look past you and don't see you.

Occasionally, when you see idiots of any style trying to ride dolphins or sea turtles, it's really hard not to swear. When you see them walking on top of a heiau or making a U-Turn in the middle of Palani road just beyond Henry because they, evidently, do not think there is a driveway or side street within the next 100 miles, it's hard not to be a little peeved.

That's something, I can remember (2007) having to have a reservation to get into Roy's also there were so many people and it was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think.

I love the food at Roy's.
