The road is now open... police ask that drivers not stop or park between Apa'a and post Office Rd.

Pahoa Village Road reopens as lava threat eases

Pahoa Village Road reopened at noon Wednesday as lava has stopped flowing near the front of the flow and Hawaiian Electric Light Co. crews removed cinder and other materials installed to protect its utility poles from lava.

Hawaii County Civil Defense officials asked motorists to drive with caution because some utility pole protection materials remain in place.

Motorists are also asked not to stop or park along the road or block driveways to view the stalled lava flow.

"The safety of all motorists and pedestrians depends on everyone's cooperation and assistance. Please respect the privacy of the area residents and do not trespass on private property to view the lava flow," Civil Defense officials said in a message posted on the county website.

Police and National Guard personnel are remaining in the area to keep traffic flowing, officials said.

A section of Pahoa Village Road between Apaa Street and Post Office Road had been closed since lava crossed Apaa Street last month.

Lava came within 500 feet of the road before stalling. (11/19)

I read that earlier! What a great relief!
Looking forward to seeing things get back to normal! At least for awhile, until Pele decides to ruffle her feathers again!

While it's a relief that Pāhoa Village Road is open again, the ongoing presence of the National Guard insures that things aren't exactly "back to normal."

Some friends and I went to the studio arts tour in HPP yesterday and stopped at Kaleo's in Pahoa for lunch. We drove down Pahoa Village Road and got to see first-hand the barriers built around HELCO's poles. I really had no idea how big these barriers are, but they were huge! Very impressive to actually see them.

There was a lot of traffic on Pahoa Village Road (both cars and pedestrians) and it was good to see the town looking vibrant. The restaurant was busy, even in mid-afternoon, and I heard one party asking the waiter about where they could go to see the lava.

Still a lot of albezia trees down on vacant lots in HPP, a result of Iselle. They were very tall (30 feet?) with very very shallow roots. Easy to see why they are a hazard.

For folks who are not there, you can see one of those poles at about 1:05 of this video.

Eruption Information Update For Saturday December 27th At 5:00PM

This is an eruption and lava flow information update for Saturday December 27th at 5:00PM.

This afternoon’s assessment shows that the previously stalled flow front has resumed activity and continues to advance very slowly in a east/northeast direction. The flow has advanced approximately 10 yards since 6:30a.m. this morning and approximately 25 yards total since yesterday afternoon. The activity appears sluggish and the front remains narrow at approximately 25 yards wide. The front or leading edge is located .6 miles upslope of the Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection. The surface breakouts and activity along both margins continues upslope of the front however current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities. Civil Defense and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory personnel are maintaining close observations of the flow. Residents and businesses down slope will be kept informed of any changes in flow activity, advancement, and status.

The Railroad Avenue alternate access road remains opened to allow for motorists to become familiar with the road and traffic flow. Motorists are advised to remain on the designated route and comply with the posted speed limit. Highway 130 remains open and there is no anticipated road closure at this time.
On behalf of the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency and our partners we would like to thank everyone for your assistance and cooperation. http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts
