Bundle up.

It's dry cold most of the time and I see cyclists out riding their bikes all winter. The bus routes are rather limited, so you would have to plan carefully where you live and where you need to be.

Don't see why winter would get in the way much riding the bus.

Biking: Plenty of people definitely do it, but I wouldnt say it's the norm in the dead of winter.

Depends on your tolerance of cold. Where are you moving from? Where you live, do you make the winter commute now?

As noted above Bend does get darned cold during the winter. Google 'monthly temperature' averages.

Edit: Ah here we are ..... note the lows for the day: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxcli...graph/USOR0031

My husband commutes by bike every single day of the year. It's definitely doable. However, if you plan on living completely without a car, I would probably pick a location that is completely walkable so you don't have to rely on the bus or deal with the ice/snow on a bike. Coming from Georgia, you might be in for a shock with the cold temps.

I don't think the weather is going to be something you will be prepaired for. If you get a car and are not used to snow, you will have another shock. Walk ...... , not likely.

Like others have said, coming from Georgia you're in for a shock since we actually HAVE a winter And a long one at that......

If you plan on having a car by the first of December that doesn't leave much gap in your life without....I think you can bit the bullet.

Where are you planning on living in town? Some parts of town, as Delta mentioned, are more walkable.

And please listen to Steven Pickering. Be careful while driving in the snow here. They don't plow much here, imho, and when you're on snow and ice you have to be extremely careful especially with your breaking/following distance/becoming overconfident......among other things.

Here is a link to the bus system in Bend. Cascades East Transit I'm not very good at reading their service route map, but it appears you will have a route within walking distance of that motel. Hopefully you won't need to go anywhere on Sunday though, because their is no Sunday service. If I were you, I'd actually look at staying a bit closer to town, or get a bike. There are some cheap motels off of 3rd St. near US 20 and Franklin. You might also look at sites like craigslist, or airbnb.com, where you can rent a room in someone's home for pretty cheap (plus you'll have access to the kitchen, etc). Personally, the Bend Value Inn is located in one of the yuckiest parts of town. It's not necessarily bad, but you'll essentially be sandwiched between the Hwy. 97 and 3rd St. (which is business 97), as well as the train. It's also an industrial part of town. It's noisy and has a high transient population.
