Port Allen is a "new bridge" away from LSU. On the East Baton Rouge side, I wouldn't recommend much unless you somehow could get your kids into the LSU Lab School. If you HAVE to live near LSU, West Baton Rouge's schools are adequate - especially compared to (what's left of) the East Baton Rouge system.

Brusly has good schools and good teachers, but you have to live in the town of Brusly itself. You can't live in Port Allen or BTR and send your children there.
Port Allen schools aren't perfect, but the teachers in WBR make more money now so maybe they can retain some of their higher quality teachers.
Around LSU and EBR, I don't even know what would be considered good anymore for middle school kids. LSU Lab is obviously one of the places to be, if you can get in.
But if you're living in EBR, then really the only choices you have in WBR are Holy Family (Port Allen) and St. John (Plaquemine). Neither were very difficult to get into 7 -10 years ago. Not sure of the standards and qualifications now. Heard Holy Family has gone downhill though.

Objectively speaking, (behind the Lab School, which requires political pull to get in), the quality of middle schools ranks like this:
4 stars - Sherwood Middle - East Baton Rouge
3 stars - Prairieville Middle - Ascension
3 stars - Northwestern Middle - Zachary
3 stars - McKinley Middle - East Baton Rouge
3 stars - Dutchtown Middle - Ascension
3 stars - Live Oak Middle - Livingston
3 stars - Galvez Middle - Ascension
3 stars - St. Amant Middle - Ascension
3 stars - Albany Middle - Livingston
3 stars - Glasgow Middle - East Baton Rouge
3 stars - Springfield Middle - Livingston

Think of 3 stars as 'average', 4 stars as 'good', and 5 stars as 'excellent'

As for Brusly.
Brusly Middle is a 2 star school, as is Devall Middle.
Central Middle is 2 stars
Westdale Middle (EBR) is 2 stars, as is Woodlawn Middle, and Scotlandville Middle
Gonzales Middle is 2 stars.

Anything else is pretty well garbage.
