They have become more popular in American society altogether. NBA players reflect that overall trend. I would say Dennis Rodman was the first player I remember being covered in tattoos.

I think Dennis Rodman started the tattoo, hair coloring, and body piercing trend. Back then he was considered a freak when he did what he did but now it's like 90% of NBA players have a tattoo, tattoos, and excessive tattoos.
On dark-skinned players, it almost appears (at least for sports purposes) that the tattoos are difficult to interpret or to differentiate from others because the ink is too close to their skin tone; it almost doesn't matter what they tattoo on themselves. For white players like Chris Andersen or to go a bit older, Jason Williams, the stark contrast between the ink and their skin tone is pretty "wow", but I think less attractive overall.
Such is life, it too is very cyclical. Eventually, people (and thus, sports figures) will tire of tattoo culture and desire a more clean, sleek look a la Anderson Silva in the UFC.

Allen Iverson created the tattoo and braid's image. A magazine even airbrushed his tattoo's from the cover photo years ago. No young kid has ever said hey I think Dennis Rodman is really cool instead of weird.
Birdman is way too light to have all the colors in that ink. LOL, Durant has the Washington logo on his stomach...Monta Ellis has a Dubs logo on his shoulder, and it's big.....JR Smith has the NY logo on his neck....

Correct. Iverson's legacy is today's small guard-dominant league.

I agree I think while Rodman was considered a freak and was even going with some cross gender stuff long before it became more accepted by the general public Iverson was the superstar that emerged after the "gangsta" fashion era when it would have been difficult to find any player without some tattoos. But being models for commercials the reemergence of tattooing among public celebrities who had potential endorsement contracts to lose followed its adoption by the general public.
