Hey all. I am coming to Bangor the 13th through the 17th on business. I will have my evenings to mess around and would like to drive down to the coast. Anybody have any hints on things to do in Bangor or where to go to find the atlantic? I am in Chicago, so I don't get an oppurtunity much to see the ocean. Any deep sea fishing or anything else to do?

Take route 1A to bar harbor, it takes a little over an hour but expect traffic. There are charter boats that go out of there along with whale watching boats. The best part of the Bar Harbor area is Acadia National Park.

Bangor is on the Penobscot River. Cross to the other side and go south on Rt. 15 to the end. It will take you through plenty of Maine villages and they are not tourist traps. At the very end is Stonington. Then on another night take Rt. 175 to the end. Along the way stop at the Bagaduce in North Brooksville for the world's absolute best fried clams. No tourist traps on that road either, but you will pass some yard sales.

If you don't want to go that far just stop at Crosbys in Orland just off Rt. 15 for the world's second best fried clams. Pretty darn good too.

Bangor has a pretty good tide. It's only 15 miles up river from Bucksport where tankers come in to deliver fuel.

IMO Stonington is the quintessential Maine fishing village. I think I'd agree that with just one short afternoon I'd choose the road less traveled.

If it's a rainy day, visit the Cole Land Transportation museum. It is an amazing place if you like old trucks and military vehicles.
