Eh...that sucks...wonder who wasn't doing a very thorough walk around...I can only imagine my shock if I looked up into the wheel-well and saw a dead guy who'd been there for 4 days...i'd likely have jumped back, hit my head on the gear, and gotten knocked out....then given luck, i'd have been run over by the airplane when the ramp workers pushed it off the gate.
The apparent cause of death was exposure to very cold temperatures and they suspect the guy was a stow-away.
Sounds like somebody needs to make their airports a little more secure. The one thing I'm wondering about is how the heck did the guy manage to climb into the wheel well without being noticed? No security cameras to monitor what goes on around the perimeter or at the gates?
Keep in mind also, somebody like that could have attached a bomb to himself.. and you know what the end result could have been.

The gear doors are closed on an Airbus when the gear is down and locked. It would be impossible to look inside the gear well during a walk around.

Never flew the bus, so I was unaware of that. Our little tires were exposed on the EMB, and simply had a brush seal around them. So the pilot doing the walk around probably thought they smacked a bird or something, instead of a body hiding behind the gear door, yuck.
As to airport security, I can remember a few years back when a homeless guy walked through a security checkpoint here in St. Louis. The guy then managed to get into an open Embraer on the ramp, and walked to the back of the plane to take a nap. They didn't find the guy until the aircraft was requested to be used for service the next morning, when they brought it to the gate...can't remember if he was found by the cabin crew, or the cleaners, but either way, it was a major snafu.
Stowaways who hide in airplane wheel wells must not be very bright or are supremely ignorant to be unaware what happens when the plane ascends to 30,000' plus for a couple hours.
But then again, desperate people can do desperate things.
