I just missed out on a costco discount for tires. Buy 4, Save $70.

The thing is, I HAD to get a new pair as one pair were completely worn. The other pair have about a year of tread left.

I asked, and the tire center would let me buy a second pair and still get the discount!

If I wait, I don't have to pay about $250 until at least six months later, maybe even a year.

If I buy now, I get quieter safer tires at a great price.

What would you do?

Your life is more important than the cost of the tires. I'd always recommend having the best tires on your car at all times. When you hit a patch of water, oil, or ice, you'll want something that's going to regain traction asap.

I would buy the tires now. Take advantage of the discount, and you have 4 new tires on the vehicle, since a set can be easier to maintain for rotation, etc.

Yeah, I definitely think it's a good idea to get the new tires. I wish I had waited and gotten the longer wear tires rated at 80K.

I wonder if I could do an exchange at this point?

Read the sidewall to check the date the tires were made. Many discount tire dealers sell very old warehoused tires,...some discontinued for several years. Buy the best quality tires you can afford. You life is riding on those tires.

I like to have a full set of matching tires on the car. (or truck).
That way I know all tires perform the same together.
If it were me I would buy two more tires just like the new ones you just got and then rotate them every 5,000 miles. They wear together over the life span of the tires and when they need replaced all 4 will need changed. And then I start the cycle over again.
I like all four tires to be equal or near equal in tread depth, wear patterns, etc.
Rotation, maintaining proper air pressure, will greatly increase the life of a set of tires.
And of course having the alignment checked once in awhile. Especialy if where you live the roads have pot holes form from the winter weather.

I am DEFINITELY getting new then.

Do you think my tire store will go for this: returning the new tires, and getting a set of four matching but different tires. The different tires would be 80K tires, not 45K warranty tires.

Definitely BUY the new tires, Guy . . . for both safety and better performance.

However, you may want to shop around before signing on the dotted line. I've just replaced the tires on my '05 SSR and the best deal by far was at Discount Tire, not Costco nor Sam's Club.

Good Luck

IMHO, mileage warranties are overrated. I personally avoid high mileage tires, as the tradeoff for longevity is less traction from the harder compound. It's not the everyday driving that's a concern ... it's the emergency situation, and a faster wearing but stickier tire could very well be the difference between avoiding an accident ... or being in one.
