Evolution in time and with modern up to date needs it is inevitable that the old Parking Meter be scrapped and New Electric charging Meters be installed for all the pending Electic cars to be built.
Go shopping at the mall and plug in your charging cord and deposit the needed coins to charge your car and have no worrys about getting back home.
We have had the coin operated self car wash...coins to refill the low tire air...many coin needed facilities...why not a coin operating chargeing plug in for the NEW car generation?

You could do that... or do it the businessman way and monopolize the market by having to create accounts with the meter company. They give you a pin, barcode or "credit" card so all billing can be done electronically. Additionally you could do it the smart way by having the meters able to process both coins and electronic payment.
Cambridge, MA has had electric car charging stations for years, though I am not sure about payment for usage. New Haven also has a relatively new garage where EVs can be recharged for free.
Also, The Charles Hotel has an electric juice bar in its garage that's complimentary for guests, and I don't believe is accessible for non-guests. And the Element Hotel in Lexington has a charging station that's free for guests, and a fee-based service for non-guests. I have seen more EV technologies in the Boston area for longer than I have in other regions, save for Southern California when the EV was mandated as part of the ZEV program that launched the Saturn EV1, a RAV4EV, and a Honda EV. However, charging stations were not prevalent in the area, at least not as conspicuously as I have noticed in the Boston area.

They can always integrate a parking meter and electric meter into one unit. Local government won't turn down the chance to collect parking fees while charging you for the power at the same time. Not to mention there will still be a large number of non electrics on the road.
Weare a long way from seeing that especailly since no one see the electric cars being that popualr to make such profitable anyhtime in the near future.

It will take some time but they will decrease in price for entry level models.
I haven't seen any non electric meters in at least 10 years. All of the ones in the Bay Area are electric and the meters in San Francisco take prepaid cards.
