We have a 2wd suv (escalade) and we are going to spend the christmas holiday in Bend, Oregon. I am planning on purchasing a set of cable chains, but the manual says "Do not use chains on this vehicle"... so now what?

Anybody use chains on a 2wd suburban or escalade?

Thanks.

Get a vehicle that is more suited to the conditions?

Seems like an expensive vehicle to risk.

Does the vehicle have any type of traction/stability control?

If you have stabilitrak you should be fine. I had that on my Charger R/T and it work fine in the Chicagoland area. With the Charger the Stabilitrak system reduce power to the slipping tires allowing the wheels to gain traction in slippery condition. I even drove in a blizzard with slow up to 10'' high no problem. On one occassion in my driveway I got stuck purposely to prove to my wife that the tires will not spin out of control in the snow if she applied full pressure to the gas pedal on ice or slow. Even with full pressue on the pedal the car creeped up the driveway approx. 5 mph.

wait for the roads to be plowed if possible.

i have never been stuck worse than when I high-centered on snow in an otherwise capable 2WD truck. it was my fault (obviously) but in the dark, with the lights reflecting off the snow, i never saw it get deeper.

just go slow and pay attention :-)

If there is ICE on the roads you are up blanks creek no matter what traction/stability aid you may have.

Just take it easy and you will be ok. An Escalade weighs a lot, and will bite into snow. 2WD is not ideal, but I have driven a 2wd pickup in snow before, and you can get by if your just easy on the throttle.

Had you considered switching to snow/winter tires?
