The CARS program requires the buyer to have owned his vehicle for at least a year before it is eligible. So the seemingly obvious idea of buying a beater and trading it in won't work.

I can attest to that.... I had to drive by our local Honda/Nissan/Mazda/Suzuki dealer today and the huge field across the street has tons of cars/trucks/SUVs with "CFC" on the windows and has two blocking the entrance that says "NO TRESPASSING", as if they are afraid someone will damage a car that is going to be smashed like a pancake.

There WERE alot of older (90s) Ford Explorers, Chevy Blazers, 90s Cadillacs and Lincoln Continentals, BMW 7-Series, 5-Series, VWs and even some early 2000s Dodge Caravans. One looked like new and it was at least a 2003 model! There were even Lexus' and Acuras in there that were very nice cars with CFC on the windows! I didnt see any Mercedes. Most were 90s SUVS, trucks and big cars. There are alot of cars in that lot that are very nice and soon they will be a memory. Think of all of the poor people that cant afford a car that desperately needs one. What a shame it is.

I dont know... the program is good for the deales/auto makers, but its taking away from the tax payers and people that cant afford a car at all.

I have two cars that would easily qualify for the CFC that have a trade-in value lower than $4500, but they are not getting my cars.... I had considered trading in my 91' Lexus that needs some work now and has 222K, but I cant part with it. I cant allow them to smash it after they destroy the engine.

They weren't morons because not enough people bought them for it to be profitable. 2 door SUVs are not interesting to very many people - except the hard core offroad crowd that buys Jeeps and FJ Cruisers.

I just have to think some folks are turning in vehicles that could bring better money on the open market and not be 'wasted'.

Are they lazy or trying to save the planet?

Dealerships are responsible for everything in the CFC process, so they probably are afraid.

If the car is damaged before it's turned over, it's on the dealer.

A 1970 Chevette with the 454 engine recently sold for $150,000. A friend of mine who sells used parts on Ebay is really stressed out at some of the cars being junked; he said the parts are worth quite a bit on many of the cars.

So, how were all these poor people going to get these cars that obviously no one was selling just 3 months ago?

Is your argument that the cars once traded in should have been given to poor people? I would just love to read the ****storm if that were part of the program.

You "think" but you don't know... interesting.

Edmunds list the average price of a 2000 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer 4wd at $4,043 when sold to a private party and $2,990 trade in.

Edmunds used Ford Explorer car appraisal. Used Ford car pricing.

Do you mean a 1980 Chevette? I dont think they made them in 1970. I think it was 1976-1987.
