Is it popping out of gear, or is it staying in gear and just no engaging?

I had a car with a dhying transmission that started losing gears when I was driving back from a trip to the mountains. I got out ont he freeway and put it in fourth gear. I downshifted and then went back to fourth gear and there was no fourth gear. It was just gone. It did nto pop out, the gear just was not there anymore.

This partiucaly car redlines at 7500 rpm (maybe a bit higher) So I just drove in 3rd gear. I got off the freeway and onto a highway as soon as possible. After a while, thrid gear wsa not there anymore. It was simply gone. Eventually second went away as well and I crawled home in first gear and then replaced the transmission. I never did find out what the problem was, but it was nto popping out of gear, the lever went into position and stayed there, the gear just was not there. It acted like it was in neutral.

Hopefuilly that is nto what you are talking about. I hate transmissions, because I do nto really understand them

Previous owner may have been doing a lot of high speed downshifting causing some damage to the syncros.

Then again the OP admitted to GRINDING the gears which could be a major contributer to the overall damage.

Syncros allow the shift pattern to go smoothly from one gear to another (up or down) providing the clutch is Disengaged Properly. Have a feeling the OP is very inexperienced and did some major damage.

Doubt a dealer sold a car without having driven the car at some point before being put on the lot.
