I'd look to it by vehicle as opposed to transaction.

I know someone with CarMax warranties and they have used them, and then someone who bought a vehicle from CarMax without one and the vehicle was out of warranty and needed a huge number of repairs within a year. It's all about peace of mind, though, with the warranties, and many vehicles do not need them sicne the likely repairs do not justify the purchase price of the warranty.
I completely agree here. It really does depend on the model of the car. If it's known as a relatively reliable car I wouldn't do the extended warrenty. However, If it's a german made car with some known reliability issues, etc, it could be well worth the money to pay for the extended warrenty. From what I know Carmax's extended warrenty covers nearly anything that could go wrong and I've read a couple of online reviews from guys who are believers in that warrenty after buying luxury german cars because within the first year or two the warranty paid itself off.

I know of one person who bought a Range Rover at Car Max and got the extended warranty. He got his money's worth in less than 12 months and plans on driving it for as long as Car Max is paying for his repairs.
