A wide-ranging program that would give consumers turning in old clunkers cash vouchers worth up to $5,000 to buy new, more fuel-efficient vehicles was introduced Tuesday in Congress.

The bill aims to boost car sales in the midst of the recession, help struggling consumers buy new cars and cut pollution by taking some of the oldest, dirtiest cars off the road.

What about those that like their old, dirty clunkers?

I still could not afford a new car with that $5000, unless it was like a $10,000 new car, with a $2K rebate.

Yeah, right, "they" are going to give me $5000 so I can trade my (1994) truck in on one that has an MSRP in excess of $40,000, has a larger engine, and gets less fuel economy.
Or, trade my old (1995) motorhome in on a new one.
Nope, sorry, no stimulus there, neither such trade is ever gonna happen!

Great idea: trade in your clunker for a car that will become a clunker in five years.

Brilliant!

I think they should change it to "we'll give you $3000 for your clunker regardless if it's worth $3000, and you wont have to pay a cent of tax on it". Then I might consider.
