"Crossovers" are supposed to be car based SUVs. That term is the catch phrase for what looks like an SUV.

If an SUV Is Too Big and Too Thirsty, Try a Crossover

Quote:
“A crossover can be just about any vehicle with unibody construction, a relatively high seating position, available four-wheel drive (or not), and a reasonable amount of cargo space.”
Crossover vehicles blur lines between cars and sport-utilities.

Still, "there is no such thing as a crossover," says George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. "It's a term that the industry uses that has no meaning for consumers."
Maybe because SUVs are a FOUR Letter Word, due to the rising price of oil.

I guess I didn't buy an SUV, I bought a crossover....

Crossover was originally meant to be a car-based SUV. It was originated with the Lexus RX in 1998.

Since then, the term has been corrupted when all the other automakers saw how insanely popular the RX was.

I consider crossovers to be station wagons not SUVs, I think of my Ford Edge as a wagon.

It's all bull**** anyway; it is what it is.

I think the term "station wagon" died and "crossover" took over. Crossover is a bit more broad than station wagon, with cars that are close to SUVs and some that aren't.

I think crossover is a valid classification of a car based SUV rather than on built on a truck platform. It is often higher profile and offers more SUV features than a station wagon which is a car with a storage cab rather than a traditional trunk.

crossovers are just different looking station wagons

a body with more seats or cargo space on a car frame (some SUVs are also the same thing)

We call them pregnant station wagons. We keep waiting for them to produce a bunch of mini station wagons. Isn't that where the Saturns came from?
