I've recently learned that the oil filter wrenches I purchased from Autozone are junk junk junk.
I have one that's the metal loop style that can't grab the filter. I've got one that looks like a pair of oversized pliers....the nut is stripped to where I can't get a grip on the filter.
I can't change oil on our 2007 CRV.
Alright, off my soap box. Need something that's gonna last me the next 20 years, not just the next year.
I've got a number of the "metal strap" type...various sizes of course over the years.
The one I grab for more often than not is a "jar opener" from the kitchen. It's the kinda thing with a handle and a thick rubber strap, free at one end. You place the rubber strap in a grove in the "handle" and snug it down , then slip it over the filter
It never crushes the filter no matter how tight it's been put on and one size fits all filters.
I have just one car, and use the exact same brand and model of oil filter at every oil change. Most car parts places sell what looks like a big open ended socket that slips over the entire base of the oil filter. At the bottom is a square opening to put in a socket wrench. These work great for me every time, you just have to get the exact size filter remover for the filter you will use. Nothing to break either.
Depends on the location of the filter mount and the amount of clearance you have around it as to which type of wrench will work the best for your application.
On my current vehicle, I use a socket type - 93mm/36 flutes. While the automotive chain stores sell that size, those didn't work well because it wouldn't seat properly on the filter with the socket driver attached. I ordered a slightly different one in which the socket driver doesn't intrude into the socket cap like the store-bought ones do. No more seating problems.
Wheelsup, that socket should be easy to find and cheap. I believe the GM Ecotec uses the same cartridge type filter. There are a lot of Cobalts and Ions around that need that socket.
All have failed except the one that looks like an odd shaped skinny pipe wrench. I can easily grab the filter any way I need to and it works perfectly.
I just go to Advance and rent their wheel bearing kit (free if returned) when I buy my oil. It's around $20 to buy just the 36mm, not sure if Harbor Freight sells just a 36mm or not they'd probably have it cheaper.
