My son had a rebuilt transmission put in his '96 Toyota Camry in October. At that time he was living in PA. He is now living in NC and broke down yesterday. The trans. is shot after less than two months! My husband called the PA mechanic and he said to bring it in. Well we can't do that -- the car is in NC, where we live. There was supposedly a 90 warranty on product and labor, but my son does not have any paperwork other than a receipt. Do we have any recourse with this mechanic and his junk transmission? We welcome any advice!!

Broken down (could mean anything) or not shifting gears?
Stick or Automatic? (very important)
Stick with a clutch? (maybe adjustment)
Automatic...slipping into gear? (fluid low)
Automatic...motor running...not going into gear? (maybe a vacuem hose)(linkege adjustment)
Most rebuilt trannys are okay except maybe a minor adjustment (automatic/linkege) or the unforseen.
Honest rebuilders will always check into their work.
We need more info for possible solutions to your problem.
Steve

I don't have much advice, except next time get a better warranty.

Not long ago we replaced the trannie in an old Chrysler LHS. I shopped around and the best deal was at the Chrysler dealer, where we got a factory rebuild with a 3 year/100,000 mile factory warranty.
Cost was about $2635 complete.

Same here with GM (3yr/100k) - and nationwide coverage.

Know what you're buying, 'cause you get what you pay for.

You're probably right. The overdrive went out in my '94 Cutlass Supreme so I had a rebuilt one put in for $1500 by a local shop. It lasted about 20k miles before it started acting up again. Someone pulled out in front of me and I totalled it before I had to replace it the second time.

What exactly do you mean by "the transmission is shot"? Could be as simple as a cable coming loose, or a wiring harness plug not fully plugged in...

Or a kid driving like a maniac and killing it before its time...

Oh yes - I had a 1995 Chrysler Concorde (same engine/tranny as the LHS. It only had 86K and the transmission started going out. Grinding, jerking, etc. I had it rebuilt at a shop for $900., but it never did seem to shift right into overdrive, but since I bought the car needing the trans work, it may have been normal. I sold the car at 96K before it went out again.
