The reason I ask is I was looking at some vehicles for sale locally, one was a BMW 540I....a quick search showed it gets quite poor gas mileage but somehow I doubt the 'Holier than Thou' types put it in the saem category as Suburbans and such.....

Holier than thou types aside, trucks and SUV's are catagorized as trucks and therefore are exempt from fuel mileage restrictions such as this. google "gas guzzler" or "gas guzzler tax" and you should be able to read it down to the letter of the law.

I think the "gas guzzler" stipulation might vary from state to state.

I would but the difference is this- the BMW as well as other "cars" like the Corvette and Viper have to pay a tax for poor gas mileage while "suvs" are not penalized the same way. The standards should apply to ALL non commercial vehicles.

The Corvette doesn't get bad fuel economy...

It actually gets quite good considering.

But the BMW I mentioned got around 20mpg....

Which considering it could only carry five people isn't very good at all, especially when compared to a full size SUV....

It's set at the federal level. Emissions standards, on the other hand, can vary amongst the states.

I was meaning more what people thought of as a 'gas guzzler'....

Because it is their own perceptions it seems and is mainly concerned with SUVs.

No-one goes around screaming about evil vans or luxury cars....

It almost seems it is just a hatred of SUVs.

My general definition is that if it doesn't at least average 20mpg it's a gas guzzler. So if your B'mer is getting less than that it's not much better than most SUV's.

Hmmmm, quite an interesting group of 'gas guzzlers'....

Mazda 6.
Subaru Legacy.
Volkswagen Passat.
Hyundai Azera.
Mitsubishi Galant.

Just to name a few.

As I stated,it is interesting to see what constitutes a 'gas guzzler' by peoples standards.

If I were you, I'd buy what I like and not worry about what other people think. That's a nice car, if properly maintained. I say see how you like it.
