Is there any way to find out about the age type kind, etc of a motor and/or transmission?

If you can identify what it is then you will be able to get a production month from the engine serial number...

I know people that can give you the Production Month of Fords going all the way back to the Model T...

Seriously, the easiest source is a car club for that type of car...

Where would these numbers be located?

Motor Numbers are stamped on a machined flat section on the block... the block contains the crankshaft and pistons.

The flat section, otherwise called the "Boss", is generally located where it can be seen when the motor is in the vehicle...

Perhaps a posting a picture will help to identify what you have? Lots of talented people on City-Data.com...

I have & know the VIN # but that does not tell you about the motor! unless you are 100% sure the car is still factory....my Van is 1990 chevy astro that has not been made since 2005!! The guy I got it from had the van for 2 years but told me he got it from a friend that put another motor in it....thats why I am asking!

Yeah, that could be an issue then. Either way you'll have take a look at the block as stated above, which in a chevy astro I assume is a huge pain in the butt.

good luck getting to that block

The motor type will easily be ID by a picture and by what is possible to easily swap in. The age isn't really important. To get a feel of the condition, a knowledgeable mechanic would have to look at the internals and maybe make some measurements to see if it's all in spec.
You can take a peek at the internals by taking the valve cover or the oil pan off, but it may not tell you much.

Usually there are numbers either stamped into the transmission bell housing flange or they're raised numbers. On the trans it to has numbers stamped into it, but if you look at the trans pan it has a certain shape to tell you what it is.

A 1990 Astro Van, most likely you have a 4.3 liter V6 with a 700-R4 trans. If there's any way you can post pics of the trans flage (left side) or the trans pan it would be of help.
