Just got my '08 copy of Consumer Reports annual report/ratings on cars. They are saying the top three automakers for overall highest quality are Honda, Toyota, and Subaru (in that order). Honda and Toyota have been duking it out for #1 for years, but I don't remember Subaru being in the top tier before. (how times have changed!) And that Ford beats Chevy. Any thoughts?
I would have guessed Honda and Toyota, but Subaru shocks me. My friend had a Subaru ten years ago and it was a piece of junk. I'm glad to hear they got their act together and improved the quality of their product. I'm a Honda girl myself. I've had several Civics, a CRX (mine got 50 mpg - I wish I still had that car, but it was totalled by an idiot who didn't have insurance), and now own an Accord. All have been great cars. I believe that I'll be a Honda girl for the rest of my life, unless they really do something stupid.
I'm suprised to see Subaru on that list too, I personally would never buy one because of the tiny dealer network. I figured Nissan would be in the top three.
I had a WRX that I beat the hell out of with no mercy -- I even rallycrossed it -- and it never gave me any troubles at all. Not to mention that it sold me on the notion that every 4-cylinder should be a boxer design. No amount of counterbalance shafts and vibration dampening technology will ever make an inline four run as smooth as a boxer four.
I have a ten year old Subaru, and love it. Not because of the reliability, but because it's kind of fun to work on. It's also a blast in the snow. I've heard a lot of good about the newer ones.
The dealer network isn't as big as the others, but it depends on where you live. We have three in our area... and it's not the biggest "import" town out there. When I visited New England, Subaru's were extremely common. One of the more visible brands, in fact. I hear they're popular in the northwest, as well.
I've had many cars from every car-making continent, and from almost every major brand. The most reliable vehicle's I've ever owned were Hondas and Toyotas. Those two will probably always be fighting for the top spot.
Subaru really makes me wonder? I thought Nissan or Lexus would have beat out Subaru. I know Lexus is from Toyota but...... They still get there own ratings.
Why are any of these overpriced German cars on the top three list??
