Why are any of these overpriced German cars on the top three list??
German?....They are Japanese, but both Honda and Toyota are built in North America as well as Japan.....As far as the price is concerned, I don't think they are overpriced at all. Remember you get what you pay for. Buy cheap and you get a cheaply made car.
How are the Foresters after they hit 4 to 6 years old. I have read some bad things about the Outback in this age range, engines and tranny's causing real problems. Do they use the same engine and tranny as the Outback?

2002 - Below average engine reliability.
2003 - Average engine reliability.
2004 - Well above average engine reliability.
2005 - Well above average engine reliability.
2006 - Well above average engine reliability.
2007 - Well above average engine reliability.

Sorry, meant aren't. NO overpriced German cars?
Japanese cars are little overpriced too.

You statement is way too general, as most manufacturers have models in different price lines...Economy, midrange, luxury and outrageous. Even some of the German makes. This thread, if I remember correctly was about the top three quality wise, not price.
I had a WRX that I beat the hell out of with no mercy -- I even rallycrossed it -- and it never gave me any troubles at all. Not to mention that it sold me on the notion that every 4-cylinder should be a boxer design. No amount of counterbalance shafts and vibration dampening technology will ever make an inline four run as smooth as a boxer four.
my first WRX, an 03, never had a single warranty claim. sold it in 2005 with 40K. my current 07's only got 16K but likewise.
some of you might also be suprised to hear that subaru, last i could recall anyway, is the only automaker with 5 star crash ratings on every vehicle.
Overall, I really like my '08 Outback Subi. Build quality is excellent. (made in Indiana) My only real complaint is no overdrive...just 4-spd. That limits mpg to about 28 highway, 24 average..."ok", but not impressive. Best I can get is 28.6, if I go REAL easy on the throttle, and don't exceed 60mph at any time. They'd have a killer product if they ever come out with a 5-spd overdrive...
