I have an 2007 Audi A4. The passenger rear tail light went out recently. I replaced the bulb (with what Autozone gave me for the A4 which was a smaller bulb that the one that was burnt out) and the break lights work now. But the dash board is still reading that the rear tail light it out. Is this because of the different type of bulb or something else?
it just reads tail light out. So i actually brought it into a shop down the road to take a quick look. He was saying it was the entire tail light and there was a fuse in the back that was burnt out. He suggested I replace the entire tail light and that any bulb i replace it with will eventually burn out. I'm not fully confident that is it hahaha so I will check with the right sized bulb
the last thing i want is this bodyshop trying to make a quick buck of me when it was a simple bulb replacement. I just wasn't positive if a smaller bulb would still make a mis-reading on the dash board.
You need to get the right bulb. Even though a bulb may physically fit in the socket, there are different wattages and resistances. It's possible that your computer can tell that the resistance values for the new bulb are not identical to the old one, and that may be why the warning light is still on even though the light technically works.
Or, you may just need to reset the warning indicator.

This. Audi and BMW bulb-out indicators check the resistance of the bulb, not just proper fitment and wattage. Cheap generic bulbs use cheaper parts which may not be within spec of the OE bulb (even though it's the same size and fits in the socket), so it will throw off the bulb-out indicator on your dash. You can either buy an OE bulb at the dealer (they cost like 10x more than a generic bulb) or go to a model-specific forum for your car and do a search. Alternatively, at least on the Audi, you can ground the 2 wires for the bulb-out indicator light behind the dash as a work-around.
I've just done some basic searching.. Not familiar with the Audi at all, hence the question about the warning. Everything I've found shows only a 'brake' warning light..
But.. Is it possible that the wrong bulb would cause the warning? yes. A simple check would be move that bulb to the left rear taillight.. Does the warning switch with it?
It could be a situation where you replaced a dual-filament bulb with a single filament, though.. That should be difficult to do.

The shop saw an Audi pull up and dollar signs started flashing in front of their eyes.
