Yeah, you buy certified used from Japan and drop it in yourself. Comes with spark plugs and oil in pan. Fully assembled.

Instead of buying from Japan, buy a used engine and either drop it in yourself or then take that engine to a shop and have them replace it and take the old engine to a re-manufacture place and sell it to them to make some money back.

OP, some more info may help. Are you looking at picking up a car dirt cheap, hoping to drop in another engine and have the overall expense still make it a good value?
Or perhaps have a friend who may need engine work, trying to help him/her out?

As one could buy used, rebuild existing, or even walk away.

If you have time, you can rebuild the engine yourself. I did it recently for fun and it is not very hard if you have a good guidebook and lots of time. You can also improve the engine if you so desire.

My friends have bought used engines from K. Watanabe Corporation.
Japan has strict laws on vehicles and they scrap them at 30,000 miles. These engines are barely broken in. Last Mazda engine I seen replaced cost $500 out the door. When they pull the engines they cut the wires at the harness, cut the hoses and leave the engine intact with anything installed like AC and power steering pumps, etc.

Yes, save the 3K and find a slightly later, used model whatever you like and go from there......

If you can't do the labor yourself do some quote shopping or see if you have any connections through friends. I blew a motor in my car recently (own fault, heavily modified) and picked up a low mileage used motor for $2k (car is a 2011...). I called a few shops to get labor estimates and prices ranged from $2500-$3000 which is simply ridiculous. My buddy's friend dropped the motor in for $600 and a six pack of IPA.

I would look into buying a used engine. I usually go to this website so I can search the country when I need to find something.
Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

I have used that site many times to get an idea on how much something will cost and who might have it in stock then make the phone call.
