Here in the Northwest it's in an around the gas door, but also along the trim and rubber seals around the windows, and every crease and crevice along the body. It's moss. Normally regular washing and an occasional extra effort with a toothbrush takes care of it.
It's moss/mildew. It's caused by not washing that area of the car (like if you didnt clean your bathtub). You can get rid of easily by just washing with car soap and water. It is common around trunks and insides of doors becasue most people can't be bothered to clean those areas.
Thanks for the response guys. Maybe I shouldve phrased my question a little differently.
It always forms around the gas door. I was wondering if it's the dried gas residue on the paint, that moss attaches to pretty fast... Or if its the gas actually taking layers off the paint and making the paint more porous and has better adhesion than the surrounding areas..
The reason you don't see it on other parts of the car is because you have a clear coat covered in multiple layers of wax. Around the gas door, many older cars don't have much of a clear coat left. Add on top of that the fact that no one waxes inside the fuel door and you do get a more porous paint. Yes, the fuel can add to it of you spill it, but it wont affect it much.
Most of what you see is mildew growing in a dark, damp environment.
