I owned a 2004 Corolla for seven years and it was very reliable and had a lot of pep. My one gripe is it was not a comfortable car. The seat was torture after a couple of hours of driving. I recently sat in a new one at an auto show and frankly, it didn't feel any more comfortable than my old one.
consider a Camry. I was looking at the cruze and the corolla. Cruze just seemed too cheap{motor looked like it was built for a motorcycle} also it had a turbo-charger..... tends to kill longevity of the motor. The corolla was ok. however the camry gets almost as good mileage and is a much more comfortable car to ride in. The cruze may as well not have a back seat........I bought a used2012 camry for 16K with 23K miles. that was as cheap as the corolla and cheaper than the cruze.
The answer is always Miata, except when it's Mazda3. I suggest you look into the 2014 model, freshly redesigned, and spanks both the Cruze and the Corolla. Mazda is also a smaller manufacturer, so there won't be nearly as many of them on the road, you get to be more unique.
Of those two I'd pick the Cruze, but I'd pick the Mazda3 over a Cruze. Nothing could force me to drive a Toyota. I think I'm allergic to beige.
On a trip to Oakland last week, I rented a 2014 Chevy Cruze from Payless, my first experience with a keyless car. Mind you, at home I drive a no-gadget, no-tech Toyota! So you can imagine what an adjustment it was for me, like entering a spaceship!!!
Finally figured out how to start it, but from talking to co-workers, and how expensive it is if you lose that remote to the car, I wouldn't even rent one of these again! Fearful I might lose that remote and be charged for it! And how many times have I lost car keys over the years!!!
A co-worker's friend's dog chewed up her remote to her keyless car and it cost her $850 to replace it!
I’m looking at making a car purchase within the next month. I live in Michigan, and my work commute is about 1 hour both ways. I'm looking for a car that's reliable so which would be a better choice? I'm also trying to spend under 19K.
Also I'm a recent college grad so I'm looking to take advantage of recent grad financing, also i'm going to put 2k down+ 2001 Chevy impala trade in.
I'm in PA and commute about the same as you and have a Honda Fit. Great commuter car:
+ 33 mpg (manually calculated)
+ very solid in snow (front wheel drive, low center of gravity) and I don't have TSC, but do have the Sport
+ hatchback and "magic" seats allow me to fit a bunch of "stuff" in the car
+ I have taken 3 others in my car to lunch and everybody was comfortable, even the 6'3" guy
+ It's about 10K between oil changes, using regular oil
+ Great resale, even with higher miles
+ Very reliable (it's a Honda) and made in Japan
- A full tank only goes for ~300-320 miles
- Not particularly fast
Chevy doesn't have a good track record either, just look at the Cobalt.
The new Chevy's are actually pretty good. Even Consumer Reports (who hates American cars) gives the Cruze strong reliability ratings.
