I am thinking about purchasing a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ (turbo), but I was wondering if I did so (I live in the Pacific Northwest), if I'd be able to carry a couple of kayaks or canoes on top of the car (just 2 at a time). I mean, they don't weigh much, but I don't know if the car is long enough.
It's worth noting that Neither Yakima nor Thule have a roof rack solution for the Sonic. There may be other options out there, but you'll have to ask about. Worst case, you could just tear up the paint with foam blocks on the roof.
As for the roof length, no worries there. You'll just want to make sure you have good tie-down points front and rear. Absolute worst case scenario, you can use a lightweight trailer (Yakima has one for sure). There are hitches available for the 2013, so that's a guaranteed option (though not inexpensive, those trailers are $2000+ )
The fact that there are no racks from those two major companies is worrisome. It is something I will have to keep in mind when looking around at cars, the ability to bring along outdoor equipment safely.
Good catch and apparently only Rhino makes a rack for the Sonic.
