72 had already seen a decline in HP due to the government regs that were to be in place in 73. The the manufactures were put in a position they had not expected and they really struggled till the addition of onboard computers and fuel management. Not to mention the addition of the Asian market. The Japs gave us what we longed for in a cheaper package. Similar to the *** v-twin bikes that mimic Harleys.
well i remember Consumer Reports reported driveability problems with some of the 1973 models especially the smaller GM and Ford models. I remember the 73 Ford Pinto had an engine that would barely run. Engines would balk and stumble, accelerated poorly and the 1974's got even worse gas mileage
I know 1973 was the year of the 5mph bumpers and the smog pumps they were putting in the engines which hindered performance, I agree that 1972 was the first year of the NET horsepower ratings
The sadder part to this story is how the big three poorly responded to the competition on up til today....they have had decades to really produce a comparable product and they can't do it...they closed the gap but it's a visible gap nonetheless.

That's not true...
This Fox Body came out of the ashes of the turd Mustang II
Was 1972 the last of the good years for the automotive industry before the quality and the powertrain of the vehicles started to decline?
No.
