I got home today and noticed that something was leaking under the car. I popped the hood and noticed a leak from what looks like a radiator hose. I turned the AC off and the leak stopped. When I turned the AC back on, it didnt leak anymore. I turned the car off and then closed the hood, and then it started leaking again, much slower this time though before it stopped after 5 minutes. The fluid definitely smells like coolant. Is this a problem with AC or do I have another problem?

Car is a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria. Im going to check the coolant level once the engine cools down.

The tell-tale sign will be what color the liquid is. If it's green, it's your coolant/anti-freeze. I'd put my money on that.

If it's black, it's probably engine oil. Red, it's tranny fluid. If it's clear water, it's condensation from your air conditioning system.

My money is on it being an anti-freeze leak.

If it's leaking coolant, the leak is suggestive of a problem with the cooling system, not the air conditioning.

The liquid looked brownish but it smelled like coolant.

The hoses attached to your A/C system will either be metal or small diameter hoses that terminate in metal fittings.

The hoses to your engine's cooling system will be large, "squishy" hoses. A bad heater hose is a very routine problem and a very easy/inexpensive fix for most cars and almost certainly for any Ford. I would replace that / have that replaced sooner rather than later because it can very suddenly become a problem that disables your car and requires a tow. You need to be watching your temperature gauge closely until you get that fixed. I think it's a good guess that this is the problem.

A leak from your A/C system is likely to look and sound like gas escaping and it doesn't take much to negatively impact the cooling capacity of your A/C. Have you noticed that your A/C isn't blowing cold air like it used to?

What color is the coolant in your car? Does it match?

Google "ford crown victoria intake manifold recall" and keep that in mind if it turns out to be a coolant leak.

You're probably due for a cooling system flush too.

Most likely it's dirty anti-freeze that hasn't been changed in a long time.

A leak in the pressurized cooling system will lower the boiling point of the coolant, usually leading to overheating.

Did your vehicle seem to get extra hot?
